Fast-growing Grimsby brewing company increases capacity by 40% with the support of MGP | Manufacturing Growth Programme

Axholme Brewing Company Ltd, now trading as Docks Beers, was founded in 2012 by Mike and Jules Richards.

The business started with a 400L brew kit housed in an industrial unit in Scunthorpe. From the beginning, the emphasis has been on consistency, quality and inventiveness.

The business felt it was important to create great examples of classic styles and to utilise seasonal and home-grown ingredients in their wide range of guest beers. Their beers are bottled painstakingly by hand and are sold all around the country and to bottle shops, festivals and markets.

In 2017 they set up a new brewhouse to meet their ever-growing demand. The brand new 2500L plant was installed in Grimsby and features an on-site tap room where beers can be drunk whilst watching the brewers at work!

To store the additional beer they were producing, the business required extra refrigerated storage space. Through the Manufacturing Growth Programme, they were able to access grant funding towards the cost of purchasing a 20ft refrigerated container. This refrigeration container has complimented the business’s investment of a 6000L brewing tank. This has increased capacity by 40% which equates to approximately 130,000 pints a year. The business has recently seen strong growth in their e-commerce sales which has boosted an increase in sales this year.

Neil Harriman, Manufacturing Growth Manager for the Manufacturing Growth Programme commented on his time supporting this SME, “I look forward to visiting the client in a non-work capacity and sampling a few of their beers!”.

Future plans for the business involve increasing capacity and production even further by adding more fermentation tanks.

Axholme Brewing Company Ltd features a Tap Room for on-site beer sales and a Docks Beers Academy for live music events.
